U.S. and China to Face Off at UCO Sit-Volleyball World Challenge
// University of Central Oklahoma
// November 30, 2007
The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team will play China’s national team during the Sit-Volleyball World Challenge hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in Edmond, Okla.
The World Challenge is being held inside UCO’s Wellness Center with team events scheduled from Dec. 3-6, 2007. Practice for the teams will be held throughout the four days with three games to be held from Dec. 4-6. Game times are Dec. 4 at 2 p.m., Dec. 5 at 9 a.m., and Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.
The World Challenge tournament was created to help the two national teams prepare for competition they will face at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.
The U.S. women’s team is expecting to improve by playing a China team that took home silver at the most recent World Championships.
Sitting volleyball is played on a smaller court than a typical volleyball court with a net measuring three and a half feet high. During games, players are “sitting” on the floor; however, they are still allowed to move freely around the court.
The changes in size of court and style of play make the sport extremely fast paced and exciting to watch. These changes allow disabled athletes a chance to compete with others locally, nationally, and from around the world.
UCO is a U.S. Paralympic Training Site for both men’s and women’s sitting volleyball. UCO currently hosts three members on the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team.
