The University of Central Oklahoma’s department of Disabled Sports and Events will host the USA Women’s Sitting Volleyball team competition against the Netherlands, June 24-29.
This will be the first visit to the United States by a foreign team to compete in sitting volleyball.
“With this first visit to America by a foreign national sitting team, it is fitting that the No. 1-ranked team in the world comes to see our great home base at UCO,” said John Kessel, Director of Disabled Programs for USA Volleyball.
UCO recently became the host site for the women’s team, hosting the first training camp on its campus in May 2007, while the men’s team has been utilizing UCO since 2005.
The Dutch team is the current world champion, having beaten China at the 2006 Sitting Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands.
The 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens were the first in which women's sitting volleyball was a medal event, with the American team winning the bronze right behind the Netherlands, who won the silver medal.
“UCO is thrilled to host this competition and invites the public to attend the matches and witness first-class volleyball competition,” said UCO’s Disabled Sports and Events Assistant Director, Katrina Shaklee.
All games are scheduled to take place at UCO’s Wellness Center.
Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Times for the games will be as followed:
Monday, June 25: 3 - 5pm Tuesday, June 26: 3 - 5pm Wednesday, June 27: 7 - 9pm Thursday, June 28: 3 - 5pm Friday, June 29: 3 - 5pm For more information, contact Katrina Shaklee at (405) 974-3144.
