U.S. Splits Two Games, Still in Playoff Hunt at World Wheelchair Curling Championship

SOLLEFTEA, Sweden - The U.S. wheelchair team led by James Pierce is still in the playoff hunt after Wednesday's action at the 2007 World Wheelchair Championship in Solleftea, Sweden.

Pierce (North Syracuse, N.Y.) and teammates Augusto Perez (East Syracuse, N.Y.), Jimmy Joseph (Hartford, N.Y.), Danell Libby (Sprakers, N.Y.) and Mark Taylor (Deansboro, N.Y.) opened the day with an 8-5 victory over Switzerland's Manfred Bolliger rink. USA stole the opening end when Bolliger's last rock hit a guard. The U.S. then allowed the Swiss to score four in the next end when Perez, shooting skip stones, missed a takeout with his last toss. USA answered with three in the third and another three in the fifth to post their third win of the round robin.

The evening game didn't go as well though as Canada's Chris Daw rink was able to steal the last two ends to beat the Americans, 4-3. The U.S. led the first the match until the final rock. The U.S. opened with one and then stole another after Daw's draw was heavy. After the teams traded singles, Perez missed a takeout to seal the win allowing Daw to steal one and force the extra end. Canada got a stone covered behind two guards early in the extra end. Perez couldn't covert a tapback giving the Canadians the win.

"I felt confident that I was going to make the sixth end takeout for the victory but took just a little too much ice," said Perez.

With one game remaining in the round robin, the U.S. is in a logjam for a semifinal berth. The U.S. team plays Korea (4-3) at 3 p.m. tomorrow to finish the round robin portion.

Teams at the World Wheelchair Championship must be composed of a mix of men and women. No sweeping of the stone is allowed in competition. Rather, athletes rely upon arm strength and true aim. Games at the national and world level are six ends in length in accordance with the World Curling Federation's rules of play.
