Lovejoy Wins Gold at Fencing World Championships
Curtis Lovejoy shows off his gold medal from the 2006 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Championships. Behind him (l-r) are U.S. fencers Mariel Zagunis, Rebecca Ward and Sada Jacobson, who swept the Women's Sabre competition at the World Championships.

At the age of 49, Curtis Lovejoy (Atlanta, Ga.) showed he's still in top form by winning gold in the Men's Foil, C Category, Monday at the 2006 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Championships in Torino, Italy.

For Lovejoy, the world championship adds to an impressive resume that features more than 40 gold medals in wheelchair fencing competition. The gold medal was also the lone medal won by U.S. wheelchair fencers at the event, which was combined with the International Fencing Federation's World Championships.

The competition in Torino was the first of two world championships that Lovejoy will compete in over the next two months. Now he will concentrate his efforts in the pool as he prepares for the 2006 IPC Swimming World Championships, which begin Dec. 2 in Durban, South Africa.
