The U.S. Paralympics Table Tennis World Championships Team recently concluded their final tune-ups before the 2006 IPC Table Tennis World Championships, Sept. 23 - Oct. 2 in Montreaux, Switzerland.
Tahl Leibovitz (Ozone Park, N.Y.) won gold medals in Open Standing Singles and Class 9 Singles events at the 2006 German Open in Wuppertal, Germany. Team USA also took fourth in the Class 7 Team event, which included a 3-2 victory over England 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
Before taking off for Germany, the team wrapped up a highly successful training camp in Portland, Ore. Led by head coach and two-time Olympian Sean O'Neill (Portland, Ore.), the team of Ed Levy (Portland, Ore.), Norm Bass (Inglewood, Calif.), Leibovitz and Andre Scott (Fort Worth, Texas) worked out in the Rose City for one week.
Oregon Sports Action, the regional Olympic Alumni Association led by Jack Elder (1972 Olympian), provided financial support for local facility use at the Waldorf School, where the camp took place. The camp featured a friendly match between the U.S. team and members of the Portland Table Tennis Club at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center. Local champion Whitney Ping (2004 Olympian) also trained with the team for two days.
The team would like to thank Oregon Sports Actions, Waldorf School, Oregon Table Tennis, Portland Table Tennis, Ping-Pong.com, and Powerbar for their contributions during the camp.
