USTA National Wheelchair Championships set for San Diego

The U.S. Open USTA National Wheelchair Championships, the premiere wheelchair tennis tournament in the United States and one of the most prestigious events in the wheelchair sports world, will take place in San Diego Oct. 4-9 at the Barnes Tennis Center.  In its 26th year and the seventh in San Diego, the U.S. Open encompasses four events: the U.S. Open, the Junior, the Senior Doubles, and the Mixed Doubles Wheelchair Tennis Championships.  Additionally, a free wheelchair tennis clinic and day of fun for local youth and adults with physical disabilities will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8.

This illustrious tournament is a world-class event and will attract approximately 150 players from thirteen countries, as well as numerous coaches, family members, friends, and countless spectators.  It is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association (a USTA national championship) and the International Tennis Federation (super series event).  Thus, local, national and international players of all skill levels will be in attendance and vying for the coveted title of U.S. Open champion.

As the number of youth and adults with physical disabilities increases, the need to provide opportunities for sports and recreational programs and activities continues to increase.  At the same time, there are limited opportunities for youth and adults with physical disabilities to engage in wheelchair sports programs and activities.  The U.S. Open USTA National Wheelchair Championships provides a unique opportunity to meet the needs of these individuals.  The various divisions of competition provide opportunities for individuals of all levels of skill/ability.

In addition to some impressive tennis, the event allows youth and adults with disabilities to socialize and interact with their peers, provides youth with disabilities an exposure to wheelchair athletes and role models, promotes overall fitness and well-being, and enhances self-esteem.  For recently injured individuals, or newly injured patients visiting from the local hospitals and rehabilitation centers, it is an affirmation that a full and active lifestyle is realistic.  For the able-bodied volunteers and spectators, it serves as an opportunity for awareness, education and understanding.

The George E. Barnes Family Junior Tennis Center is located at 4490 West Point Loma Blvd., San Diego, CA.  The Barnes Center is ideally suited for a wheelchair tennis tournament of this magnitude, and enhances the appeal and ambiance of the event.
