U.S. Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team Captures Osaka Cup Title

The U.S. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team took first place at the 2008 Women’s Friendship Games/Osaka Cup, despite playing shorthanded throughout the tournament because illness prevented Carlee Hoffman from making the trip, and starters Patty Cisneros and Jennifer Ruddell were also unavailable. Team USA was well represented at the awards ceremony with three All-Tournament Team members, Loraine Gonzales, Becca Murray and Stephanie Wheeler, who was also named Tournament MVP.

The West staved off a late comeback effort by the East to capture the NBA/NWBA All-Star Wheelchair Basketball Classic, 64-57, on Thursday evening. The game was held at the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center during the NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas. "You can't help but have a good time at an event like this," said West head coach Ron La Bar. "But, our guys lost this game last year and really wanted to go home with the win."

A short-handed U.S. Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team overcame a sluggish start to defeat Japan, 53-48, in the first game of the Osaka Cup on Thursday. The host team came out strong early, using a strong defensive effort to take a seven-point lead after the first quarter. After playing to a draw in the second quarter, the U.S. faced a 26-19 halftime deficit. The third quarter proved to be the turning point for the U.S., outscoring Japan 22-7 in the decisive frame.

As part of the NBA Cares All-Star community outreach activities, the NBA/NWBA Wheelchair All-Stars hosted a clinic for junior wheelchair athletes from the New Orleans-area Wednesday evening at the Dryades YMCA. "This is an excellent opportunity for us to expose this community to wheelchair basketball and hopefully get these youth excited about our sport," said NWBA Commissioner Dick Bryant. Approximately 20 youth with physical disabilities were taught the basic skills of wheelchair basketball.
