U.S. Newcomers Make Big Impact at 2007 IPC Cycling World Championships

Jennifer Schuble (Birmingham, Ala.) won three medals, including two gold, in her world championships debut as the U.S. took 12 medals overall at the 2007 IPC Cycling World Championships in Bordeaux, France. Schuble won both of her gold medals on the road, winning both the Time Trial and the Road Race, and nearly came up with a third gold on the track, finishing with the silver in the Pursuit.

U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, announced Wednesday the 15 athletes who will compete at the 2007 IPC Cycling World Championships, Aug. 19-27 in Bordeaux, France. The team will feature three medalists from last year's World Championships: Alejandro Albor, who won the men's HCC Road Race, Barb Buchan, who earned silver and set a world record in the women's LC3-4/CP3 Time Trial, and Allison Jones, who won the bronze in the same time trial.

For Colorado Springs resident Michael Farrell, the opportunity to compete in his own backyard served him well, as the 29-year-old won the men’s Time Trial and Pursuit races at the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Track Cycling National Championships. After winning by less than one percent over Bruce Gordon (South Bend, Ind.) in the one-kilometer Time Trial on Monday, Farrell won by a comfortable margin in Tuesday’s Pursuit.

Online event registration for the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Track Cycling National Championships, July 2-3 in Colorado Springs, Colo., is now available. The championships, which will be a part of the USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships at the 7-Eleven Velodrome, will help determine the athletes that will represent the U.S. at the 2007 IPC Cycling World Championships in Bordeaux, France. Registration ends Wednesday, June 27.
