Blind Wrestler, U.S. Paralympics Judo Jr. National Team Athlete Breaks Down Barriers

Michael Spriggs grabbed on to a teammate's shoulder and headed for the gymnasium wall, where William Ngakoue, a 215-pound junior on the C.H. Flowers High School wrestling team, rested after winning his first match. Leaning in closely, Spriggs peppered Ngakoue with questions about whether the advice he had given him had helped. Ngakoue carefully chose his words to describe the match to Spriggs, including the reversal that led to the eventual pin, because Spriggs couldn't see the match.

The United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) is pleased to compete in the 16th Annual “Sensei Memorial” Invitational Judo Tournament, to be held Sunday, Feb. 10, at the San Jose State University Event Center in San Jose, Calif. Blind and visually impaired athletes go head-to-head in competition against sighted athletes from across the United States in their preparations and quest for gold at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

The final day made the long trip more than worthwhile. Three U.S. Judo players earned medals Saturday at the 2007 Parapan Am Games, a day before heading back to the states after a month-long excursion through Brazil that included a stint at the World Championships in Sao Paulo. Greg De Wall ( Chico, Calif.) and Lisamaria Martinez ( Union City, Calif.) won silver neckwear and Myles Porter ( Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned bronze on the final day of judo competition.

Three members of the U.S. Judo Team fought with heart and composure Friday at the 2007 Parapan American Games. Scott Jones ( Little Rock, Ark.), Scott Moore ( Denver, Colo.) and Jordan Mouton ( Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave their all on the mat against the top competition from the Americas. Jones and Moore lost the battles for bronze in their classes, while Mouton went 0-3.
