Paralympic Class Champions Named at 2008 US SAILING Rolex Miami OCR

Racing concluded Friday for three Paralympic classes (SKUD-18, Sonar and 2.4mR) at US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR in Miami. The world-ranking regatta is hosting 369 sailors from 34 countries, with many of those sailors preparing for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games in China as members of their national teams. In SKUD-18s, which will debut at the 2008 Paralympic Games, Nick Scandone and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker dominated, winning the regatta's first five races and two of the remaining six.

US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR has attracted dozens of teams selected by their countries for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Regattas, set for August and September, respectively, in Qingdao, China. One of those teams is Nick Scandone (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker (Marblehead, Mass.), the USA's Paralympic representatives in the SKUD-18 class and the only ones at this regatta with a perfect score through Tuesday's competition.

Though the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are four years away, it's not too early to begin serious training. That's why 2.4mR sailor Mark Bryant is at US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR in Coconut Grove, Fla., where 375 sailors from 34 countries have converged to "test against the best." Bryant lost the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials for his class by one point in October, so he has been training with the French 2004 Paralympic gold medalist Damien Seguin to improve his game for the next time around.

US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport, has selected eight athletes as Sailing’s 2007 U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Athletes of the Year for outstanding performance and achievement. Sonar sailors Rick Doerr (Clifton, N.J.), Tim Angle (Marblehead, Mass.), and Bill Donohue (Brick, N.J.) have been named the Paralympians of the Year.
