Jessica Galli Selected as 2007 U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympian of the Year

In 2007, Jessica Galli established herself as one to watch at the upcoming Paralympic Games in Beijing, and stamped her name all over the record books in the process. For her accomplishments, the 24-year-old track & field star was selected as the USOC's 2007 Paralympian of the Year. Galli, a grad student at the University of Illinois, set new world records in the T53 200, 400 and 800m over the summer – and did it all at one competition, the Meet in the Heat in Atlanta this past June.

Two athletes have arrived in Birmingham to pursue their dreams of competing at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Scott Winkler and Carlos Leon are injured veterans who recently began competing in Paralympic sport, and both have begun training full-time at Lakeshore Foundation, an official U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Site, as part of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s VP3 program. Leon and Winkler will also be coached by Chad James, Assistant Track & Field coach at Samford University.

Forty-three athletes have been named to the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Team based on their performances at the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Championships in Marietta, Ga. and the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. “The striking positive to the composition of the team is that we’ve had very few athletes who’ve dropped off the team and a significant influx of newcomers and those who’ve returned to the team,” said head coach Troy Engle.

The U.S. Team is coming into the final homestretch of competition at the 2007 Parapan American Games in fine fashion, as it pulled in four more medals: two gold, two bronze. Matt Brown won gold in the men’s discus (F42/44) with a distance of 47.18, a throw which shattered his previous personal record and surpassed the U.S. Paralympics elite standard. For Brown, who also won bronze in the men’s combined class shot put, this competition has been a great first international meet.
