SKIING: Koznick 4th, Kildow 9th in Maribor SL
// Juliann Fritz // January 8, 2006
MARIBOR, Slovenia (Jan. 8) - Marlies Schild of Austria won her third straight World Cup slalom despite soggy, foggy conditions Sunday as she charged through a messy second run that claimed 10 skiers. Kristina Koznick (Eagan, MN) was fourth, leading two other U.S. women into the top 15. Racing a day after rains washed out a scheduled giant slalom, Schild won with a two-run time of 1:48.34 when first-run leader Kathrin Zettel skied out early in her second run. Janica Kostelic of Croatia was second (1:48.91) while Koznick finished fourth in 1:49.52. Course conditions were sketchy at best for all but the early racers in each run; while slalom normally has a high attrition rate, the 66-gate second run took out 10 athletes.
