ARCHERY: Summer World University Games Recap

IZMIR, Turkey – USA Archery sent a young talented squad to the 2005 Summer World University Games and while the medal count doesn’t show it, the future is bright for the United States in world archery competition.

The men’s compound team of Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass./James Madison University), Jedd Greshock (Shenandoah, Pa./James Madison University) and Logan Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho/Idaho State University) captured the lone medal for the U.S., a silver in the men’s team competition.

This week’s competition was the first major international event for Wilde and he responded to the challenge with a solid fifth-place finish in individual competition. Gellenthien is already one of the top-ranked junior shooters in the world and his sixth place finish in Izmir only adds to his experience. Greshock, who was the runner-up to Gellenthien at the U.S. collegiate championships, finished ninth in Izmir.

The women’s compound team of Jessica Grant (Waddell, Ariz.), Amanda Raffaelli (Bartonville, Texas) and Anna Stratton (Bend, Ore.) advanced to the Bronze medal match in the women’s team competition before finishing fourth. The Texas A&M trio’s team chemistry worked to their advantage in the team competition and they performed strongly in the individual competition as well. Grant finished 10th overall, Rafaelli ended up in a tie for 13th and Stratton earned a No. 15 finish.

The recurve teams entered the Games with less international experience collectively than the compound teams but turned in solid performances.

Sagar Mistry (Brigantine, N.J./Atlantic Cape Community College) finished ninth in the men’s individual competition. While teammates Brett Lazaroff (Bayside, N.Y./Atlantic Cape Community College) and Tyler Benner (Manheim, Pa./Claremont-McKenna College) finished in a tie for 52nd. The trio also earned a ninth place finish in the team competition.

On the women’s recurve side, Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill./Columbia University) had the strongest showing. She finished 19th in the individual competition and her strong shooting in the team round gave the U.S. a chance against eventual gold medalist Korea in the quarterfinals. Ashley Kamuf (New Albany, Ind./Indiana University-New Albany), the lone World University Games veteran on this year’s squad, finished 23rd individually and Kate Anderson (Sacramento, Calif./UCLA finished 40th.

As a team, the performance was even more positive as the women earned a fifth place finish.

The recurve competition was dominated by Korea, which won three of the four Gold medals as well as one Silver. On the compound side, Korea captured Gold in men’s and women’s team and Silver in women’s individual.
