ARCHERY: Men's Compound Bow Team Earns No. 1 Seed in Team Competition at World University Games

IZMIR, Turkey – The U.S. men’s and women’s compound bow and recurve bow teams saw their first action in the 2005 World University Games today with qualifying in the individual and team competition at the Izmirspor archery venue.

In the afternoon session the men’s compound team of Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass./James Madison University), Jedd Greshock (Shenandoah, Pa./James Madison University) and Logan Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho/Idaho State University) earned the No. 1 seed in the team competition with strong individual performances.

“The wind was tricky in the first half and we were sitting in fourth but we finished strong in the second half,” Wilde said. “There were two ends where we shot a 57-58-59 and another where we shot a 60-58-57. You can move up the leaderboard pretty fast when you do that.”

Gellenthien, ranked No. 25 in the world in compound, scored a 672 on his 72 arrows to finish third in the individual standings. Wilde finished right behind him in fourth with a 668. Greshock posted a 658 to finish 14th. Their combined score of 1,998 was the best by any country in the men’s compound qualifying rounds.

“I didn’t really get around the wind too well,” Gellenthien said. It took advantage of me when I should have taken advantage of it, but I closed pretty well. I shot a 117 out of 120 at the end and had the best form I had all day. I’m feeling pretty good about this week, we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

The three men will compete in the individual elimination rounds which begin on Sunday. Gellenthien will face No. 30 seed Tsz Wing Chiu of Hong Kong in his first elimination match. Wilde will face No. 29 Tim Nash of Great Britain while Greshock will draw No. 19 Neil Bowley of Great Britain.

Should Greshock and Gellenthien both win their opening matches on Sunday they will face each other in the second round.

Team competition will be held on Monday. The United States received a bye in the first around and will await the winner of the Great Britain-Turkey match.

In the other half of the afternoon qualifying, the women’s recurve team of Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill./Columbia University), Ashley Kamuf (New Albany, Ind./Indiana University-New Albany) and Kate Anderson (Sacramento, Calif./UCLA) finished 17th, 33rd and 36th respectively.

Miller rallied from a slow start to shoot a 606. Kamuf shot a 586 and Anderson finished with a 579.

“I really didn’t make any adjustments,” Miller said. “I just tried to shoot my strong shots and not really think about the competition at all. This is the best I’ve shot in international competition so I’m really confident going into tomorrow.”

Miller will face No. 48 seed Fairuz Hanisah Che Ibrahim of Malaysia in her first elimination match on Sunday. Kamuf will take on No. 32 seed Anna Szukalska of Poland while Anderson draws No. 29 seed Kristine Esebua of Georgia.

In Monday’s team competition the women’s recurve team will face ninth-seeded Belarus.

The men’s recurve and women’s compound teams qualified during the morning session.

Sagar Mistry (Brigantine, N.J./Atlantic Cape Community College) was the top qualifier on the men’s side with a 14th place finish. Mistry scored a 649, just five points off his career best. Brett Lazaroff (Bayside, N.Y./Atlantic Cape Community College) qualified in the No. 34 spot with a 634 while Tyler Benner (Manheim, Pa./Claremont-McKenna College) finished at No. 45 with a 621.

In the elimination rounds Mistry will face No. 51 seed Namgay Gyelishen of Bhutan. Lazaroff will face No. 31 seed Evgeniy Rygzenov of Russia. Benner will square off with No. 20 seed Muhammad Marbawi Sulaiman of Malaysia.

The men’s recurve team score of 1,904 puts the USA in ninth place in the team standings. The U.S. men will meet No. 8 Belarus in the first round of team competition.

The women’s compound team had a productive morning as Anna Stratton (Bend, Ore./Texas A&M University), Jessica Grant (Waddell, Ariz./Texas A&M University) and Amanda Raffaelli (Bartonville, Texas/Texas A&M University) qualified in 10th, 11th and 20th place respectively. Stratton recorded a 665 while Grant finished at 664 and Rafaelli came in at 646.

Stratton will open the elimination round against 23rd seeded Nicky Hunt of Great Britain. Grant will meet No. 22 seed Fiammetta Scarzella of Italy while Raffaelli draws 13th seed Maryn Schoormans of the Netherlands.

The women’s compound team score of 1,975 was good enough for fourth place and a date with No. 5 Italy in the team round.

The first three rounds of individual elimination contests in compound and the first four rounds in recurve will be held on Sunday with the winners advancing to the individual semifinals on August 16.
