Ward began fencing when she was nine. She was at a recreation center, headed for swim classes, when she got lost and wandered into a fencing class. "I signed up and I've loved it ever since," she told USA Today.
Ward is a member of the same fencing club as 2004 gold medalist Mariel Zagunis. "She's a very mentally strong fighter, and it's great to see that at such a young age she can have such incredible results," Zagunis said of Ward.
