Mariel Zagunis
- 2004 Olympic gold medalist (sabre)
- Junior World Cup champion, 2002-04
- Only U.S. Fencer to win the Junior World Cup title more than once -- she did that for three years running, from 2002-2004
- Youngest fencer to win an FIE gold medal
- Mariel started fencing at age 10 in foil began fencing because her brother was in the sport, who is also a nationally-ranked fencer
- Her first love was soccer; and she was even a varsity letterwinner in High School
- Mariel’s parents both rowed for the U.S. team at the 1976 Olympics
- Will attend Notre Dame in the fall
"I wish, sometimes, that I could always be a professional fencer, because that's kind of what it was like," Zagunis said of her fulltime Olympic training schedule. "Not professional, because I wasn't getting paid, but I was focusing everything on it. It was kind of like a job. I was practicing twice a day and doing all this cross-training."
"This was the best weekend of my life!" said Zagunis when she found out she was going to be on the 2004 U.S. Olympic fencing team.
