Growing up in Tucson, Lanne competed in soccer, gymnastics and swimming. At age 11 her mother told her she had to choose one, and she chose to stay in the water. She didn’t see herself as a standout in high school, however, and she wasn’t heavily recruited. She blossomed at the University of Texas, where she graduated in 2002. Now she lives in southern California and takes advantage of cross-training at the beach.
Lanne doesn’t plan to keep training for four more years, so she saw this as her last shot at the Olympics.“I need to get out and experience, quote unquote, the real world,” she told the Arizona Daily Star. “It seems like I’ve been an athlete forever. I’ve been really fortunate.”
