Bruce has a postcard of Amanda Beard, who won the 200m breast in world record time at Olympic Trials, hanging from her mirror at home. Coach Eric Nelson gave it to her for motivation after she missed a morning workout last summer, addressed to Bruce at “123 Easy Street, Convenience, Kansas.”
Bruce also has a postcard of Athens on her mirror.“I don’t look at them every morning or anything,” she told The Wichita Eagle. “But whenever I saw them, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I gotta give this my best shot.’ Not necessarily to make the Olympic team, but just to do my best.”
