Woodward is very active at telling teens about the dangers of smoking and how the effects of smoking can have on your career. At the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout Student New Conference, Woodward shared with student reporters the negative effects smoking has on one's aspirations and goals. "My freshman year at USC I had a roommate who was also on the swim team and smoked," said Woodward. "I asked him how that was going to help him achieve his goal of making the Olympic team. He didn't have an answer. In my specialty, you have to be able to hold your breath while sprinting 50 meters, one length of the pool. Smoking reduces your ability to do that. Bottom line, I didn't smoke and made the Olympic team. He continued to smoke and didn't."
