Many athletes have humorous things happen to them during a meet or game. Hoelzer told Bob Schaller at USA Swimming about two particular experiences. "Oh wow there are so many things," Hoelzer said. "Two instances come to mind: Once, when I was 12 or 13, I was at Southeastern Swimming – which is one step below Sectionals – and I was doing the backstroke. I had my glasses on when I jumped in the water. I swam with my glasses on, and didn’t even realize it until I felt them jiggle. This was back when I didn’t yet wear goggles. And in college one time, the starter didn’t say, “Place your feet.” So we were all in there, and all of the sudden he said “Take your mark,” and I was just panicking, because I like to grab the bar and push off. So I didn’t get a good start."
On the 2004 Olympics: "It was so amazing being there with that many high caliber athletes from every country, in every sport," said Hoelzer to www.usaswimming.org. "It’s hard to label one thing. You take in the entire experience, and the whole thing is a learning experience."
