RIO DE JANEIRO – Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and the rest of Team USA had another strong morning at the pool Thursday, taking home a total of three golds, one silver, and one bronze on day four of swim competition at the Pan American Games. Smit won the women’s 100m back and was part of the winning women’s 400m free relay team that helped increase Team USA’s total medal count to 18 at the pool.
Smit came from behind in the 100m back, overtaking the field in the last 50 meters to win gold in 1:02.01. Brazil's Fabiola Molina captured the silver in 1:02.18 and Canada's Liz Wycliffe took the bronze in 1:02.46. Wycliffe edged out USA's Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa.), who placed fourth in 1:02.49, by just three-hundredths of a second.
In the women’s 400m free relay, Smit swam the lead-off leg as the U.S. women finished the race in 3:41.97 to win the gold. Also swimming on the winning relay were Sam Woodward (Edmond, Okla.), Emily Kukors (Auburn, Wash.), and Maritza Correia (Valrico, Fla.). Brazil won the silver in 3:46.23, and Canada was third in 3:52.87.
“Both medals are important to me but I am really happy to have been on the relay,” said Smit, after winning her second gold medal of the Games. “I enjoy being part of a team. Relays are fun to be on and it’s great to have the whole team there at the blocks.”
In the only men’s final of the day, Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.) took home a silver medal for his swim in the 200m back. Clary finished in 1:59.24, while Brazil's Thiago Pereira won gold and earned a Pan Am Games record with his time of 1:58.42. Lucas Salatta, also of Brazil, earned bronze in 1:59.51. Ian Clark (Malvern, Pa.) finished seventh with a time of 2:02.27.
“The swim today felt good but I was bummed that I didn’t hit the mark I hit yesterday,” Clary said. “I was absolutely ecstatic with my swim last night. I wish I would have been a little closer to Thiago to see where he was in the race.”
Michelle McKeehan (Greenwood, Ind.) also took home gold for Team USA Thursday with a win in the women’s 100m breast. After placing third in both the preliminaries and semifinals, McKeehan had a strong swim to win gold in 1:08.49. Canada's Annamay Pierce won the silver in 1:08.72, and Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.) claimed the bronze in 1:09.18.
