Olympic Great Profile: Johnny Weissmuller

Johnny Weissmuller, also known as Tarzan, was born to German Swabian parents in Freidorf in what is now Romania on June 2, 1904. His family emigrated to Pennsylvania, where his father worked as a coal miner until the family had enough money to move to Chicago. In Chicago, Weissmuller’s mother worked as a cook, and Weissmuller helped out by working as a hotel bellhop and elevator operator. His parents would later divorce.
