Getting Started in Track & Field
By Julia Cantone // usolympicteam.com // April 15, 2004
Getting Started in Track & Field For young athletes just starting out in track and field, the Junior Olympics program is a great place to begin. There are hundreds of preliminary meets throughout the country, followed by Association Championships, Regional meets, and, finally, the National Championships, where more than 6,000 athletes compete each year. You can search for Junior Olympic and other events near you on the USATF Web site. Junior and adult runners of all experience levels can find a USATF club in their area, where they can receive training and coaching and participate in sanctioned competitions. Contact your local USATF Association for more information on how to get started training and competing in your area.
Joining USA Track & Field Membership to USATF provides secondary accident insurance while participating in sanctioned events and club practices and includes discounts on many apparel retailers and running camps. Membership is not required to compete in USATF events. You can apply online at the USATF website.
