Lakeshore Foundation
In February 2003, the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama was given designation as a training site for both Paralympic and Olympic sports. Their facilities include a 42,530 square foot athletic fieldhouse which houses a 200 meter, 3 lane track, 3 courts striped for basketball, wheelchair rugby and volleyball. There are 2 Boccia courts, coaches offices and team locker rooms. The Aquatic Center houses a 4 lane, 25 meter therapeutic pool and an 8 lane, 25 yard competition pool. The Fitness Center is a 6,000 square foot circuit training and cardiovascular fitness area, free weights area and aerobics studio. The Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Area is located on the grounds of their 45 acre campus and hosts 8 lighted, hard surface courts, a pro shop and a changing area. The Marksmanship Range is located contiguous with the main facility and houses 8 air rifle shooting lanes at 10 meters and 2 archery shooting lanes at 25 yards. The ranges are equipped with target retrievers and firearms’ maintenance/storage areas. The main facility also houses the sport science and medicine services.
While the facility serves primarily disabled populations, the arrangement with the USOC also permits able bodied sports to apply for programs via the Centralized Scheduling Department located at the Colorado Springs OTC.
