Pan Am Games, ESPN Deportes
By Peggy Manter // U.S. Olympic Committee // July 9, 2007
RIO de JANEIRO, Brazil-- ESPN Deportes will televise 160 hours of the XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, far exceeding the number of hours ever televised in the United States for these continental games.
The Spanish-language network serving more than 3 million Hispanic homes in the United States will utilize seven of ESPN’s platforms to bring the event to U.S. viewers.
The games will be held July 13-29, and will feature approximately 5,500 athletes from 42 countries competing in 36 sports.
Occurring once every four years, the year prior to each Olympic Games, the Pan American Games is a multi-sport event for the Americas. It includes both Olympic and non Olympic sports.
ESPN last televised the Pan American Games in 1999 in Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada. ABC-TV was the American network in the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. Coverage consisted of one to two hours a night and a weekend package in the U.S.
ESPN will begin its coverage on SportsCenter July 8 with a variety of special feature stories about the games and its history that will air each day at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
ESPN Deportes will begin its sport coverage July 13 with a live telecast of the Opening Ceremonies. ESPN Deportes will offer at least 10 hours of daily coverage and will feature a wide range of competitions including baseball, basketball, boxing, basketball, beach volleyball, gymnastics, tennis, track and field, soccer, swimming and futsal, the indoor version of soccer. Coverage will begin at noon and conclude at 10 p.m. EDT on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. EDT on weekends.
Other ESPN coverage platforms include ESPN2, ESPN360.com, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPNdeportes.com and the magazine ESPN Deportes La Revista.
ESPN will simulcast the men’s basketball semifinals and ESPN2 will simulcast the boxing finals of the competition.
The coverage will involve at least 20 on-air commentators including hosts, analysts, reporters and contributors. Each day of coverage will begin with a preview show and conclude with a one-hour live edition of SportsCenter at 10 p.m. EDT.
ESPN Deportes Radio, will broadcast a daily two-hour Pan American Games related news and information show and will also broadcast coverage of the men’s soccer competitions.
ESPNdeportes.com, the leading Spanish-language sports website in the U.S. and Latin America, will provide coverage highlighted by online video and live streaming of ESPN Deportes telecasts.
ESPN Deportes will produce a daily one-minute segment for ESPN’s Sports Center with highlights of the Pan Am Games during the last two weeks of July.
