The USA will also compete in the team finals for women’s tumbling and men’s double-mini trampoline. In addition, the USA qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in women’s trampoline.
Barry finished ninth and Balkan placed 11th, but moved up three spots because of the limitation of two athletes per country in the final round. Barry posted a score of 67.60 and Balkan scored a 67.00. Also competing was Sarah Prosen of Apple Valley, Minn. The women’s double mini-trampoline team is in third place behind Russia and Canada after the preliminary round.
Ludvigson finished fifth in the men’s tumbling preliminary round with a score of 72.90. Chris Adair of Lubbock, Texas, Jeffrey Brown of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Chris Ford of Haymarket, Va., competed but did not advance to individual finals. The men’s tumbling team qualified for the final round in third place behind China and Belarus.
Eight men and eight women qualify for the final round in the individual events. International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) rules state that no more than two athletes per country can advance to the final round of each individual event. In the team competition, the top five teams from the preliminary round advance to the finals.
Preliminary competition at the World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships continues today at 1:30 p.m. with men’s and women’s synchronized trampoline. Team finals for double mini, tumbling and trampoline are at 6 p.m. Individual event finals for men’s and women’s synchronized trampoline, tumbling, double mini and trampoline are tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. All listed times are Eastern Time.
The 2007 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships is the qualifying event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Based on the results, 15 men and 15 women in trampoline earned berths for their countries for the Olympic Games. Brittany Dircks of Orland Park, Ill., finished 15th and secured a wild card Olympic spot for the USA’s third straight appearance in women's trampoline. In men’s trampoline, the USA just missed qualifying for the Olympic Games with Chris Estrada of Lafayette, La., placing 16th after adjusting for the maximum athlete per country restriction.
The 2009 World Games, a multi-sport event for non-Olympic disciplines, will feature competition in tumbling, double mini-trampoline and synchronized trampoline. Each qualifying country is allowed one man and one woman in both tumbling and double mini, and one men’s pair and one women’s pair in synchronized trampoline.
