Eight Crews Look to Advance on Wednesday at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships

MUNICH, Germany – Eight U.S. boats will be looking to advance to either the semifinals or finals on Wednesday at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany.
The lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s four, men’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight will race for spots in the semifinals, while the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls and women’s eight will compete for spots in the finals. In addition, the men’s four with coxswain will race for lane assignments in Sunday’s final.
The lightweight men’s double sculls tandem of Andrew Liverman (Oakton, Va.) and Richard Montgomery (Batavia, Ill.) finished second in its heat to advance to the quarterfinals. Racing in the second of four quarterfinals, the duo will face the Czech Republic, Denmark, Japan, Austria and Uruguay on Wednesday, with the top three finishers moving on to Friday’s semifinals. Denmark is the lone heat winner in the race.
The lightweight men’s four of Tom Paradiso (Blue Bell, Pa.), Patrick Todd (Cincinnati, Ohio), Colin Farrell (Oaklyn, N.J.) and Andrew Bolton (Old Lyme, Conn.) also finished second in its heat to advance to the quarterfinals. The crew will face Australia, Denmark, Russia, Ukraine and Austria in the second of four quarterfinals. Australia is the lone heat winner in the race, while the U.S. and Ukraine finished second in their heats. The top three finishers in the race advance to Friday’s semifinals.
The women’s eight of coxswain Mary Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.), Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.), Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.), Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.), Sam Magee (Simsbury, Conn.), Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine), Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) and Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished second in its heat and will now race in a repechage, or second-chance race, on Wednesday. Racing in the second of two repechages, the crew will take on China, New Zealand and Great Britain. The top two finishers will advance to Sunday’s final.
In the lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, the crew of Carey Brezler (Waynesboro, Pa.), Sarah Bates (Garrison, N.Y.), Margaret Duggan (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Hannah Moore (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished second to Great Britain in its heat and will now race in the repechage against boats from China, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy and Myanmar. The top four finishers advance to Sunday’s final. The U.S. enters the repechage with the fastest time from the heats, while China was the other second-place finisher in Monday’s races.
After finishing third in its heat, the men’s eight of coxswain Marcus McElhenney (Lansdowne, Pa.), Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.), Steven Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.), Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Patrick O’Dunne (Nazareth, Pa.), Wyatt Allen (Portland, Maine), Brodie Buckland (Olympia, Wash.) and Alex Hearne (Princeton, N.J.) will take on Switzerland, France, Croatia and Estonia in the first of two repechages. The top three finishers move on to Friday’s semifinals.
The men’s quadruple sculls crew of Mark Flickinger (Big Flats, N.Y.), Jamie Schroeder (Wilmette, Ill.), Deaglan McEachern (Portsmouth, N.H.) and J. Sloan DuRoss (South Portland, Maine) finished third in its heat and now will race in the first of two repechages. With the top two finishers moving on to the semifinals, the U.S. will face Canada, Belarus, Croatia and China. The U.S. comes into the race with the fastest time from the heats.
The lightweight men’s quadruple sculls crew of Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg (Philadelphia, Pa.), Cody Lowry (Bristow, Okla.), Jon D’Alba (Berwyn, Pa.) and Sam Saylor (San Diego, Calif.) will race in the repechage after finishing third in its heat. The quartet will take on Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Serbia and Hungary, with the top four finishers advancing to the final. Germany and Great Britain are the top two seeds in the race, having finished in second place in the two heats.
The lightweight women’s double sculls tandem of Jana Heere (Bensalem, Pa.) and Wendy Tripician (Needham, Mass.) finished fifth in Monday’s heat and will try to get back on track in the second of two repechages on Wednesday. The crew will take on Japan, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway and Uzbekistan, with the top three finishers moving on to the semifinals.
With only six entries, the men’s four with coxswain is a final-only event. On Wednesday, the crew of Ned DelGuercio (Media, Pa.), Chris Liwski (Sarasota, Fla.), Sam Burns (Seattle, Wash.), Dan Beery (Oaktown, Ind.) and Matt Deakin (San Francisco, Calif.) will row in a race for lanes for Sunday’s final. The U.S. will take on The Netherlands, Great Britain, Serbia, Italy and Germany.
The eight-day regatta, which serves as the primary country qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games, features 1,285 athletes racing in 474 crews from 68 nations.
