2007 USRowing Youth National Championships Underway

BATAVIA, Ohio – Maritime Rowing Club and Capital Crew posted the fastest times of the heats in the youth eights’ races during the first day of competition at the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake.
In the women’s eight, Maritime clocked a 6:30:99 to finish more than three seconds ahead of Phillips Exeter Academy’s 6:34:42. St. Ignatius Crew captured the first heat in a time of 6:37:69, while Everett Rowing Association won the other heat with a 6:38:61. The three crews will enter tomorrow’s semifinals as the top seeds.
In the men’s eight, Capital Crew won the first heat with a time of 5:50:97, finishing less than one second ahead of Pacific Rowing Club in a 5:51:58. Green Lake Crew won the second head in a 5:53:85, while Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center topped heat three with a time of 5:54:14.
In one of the closest races of the day, Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Emily Dreissigacker edged Steel City Rowing Club’s Suzanne Maddamma by 0.12 seconds to win the second heat of the women’s single sculls. Dreissigacker, who was a teammate of Maddamma’s on the 2006 Junior National Team, passed the Steel City sculler in the final few strokes to win the heat in a time of 8:20.21. HB Rowing’s Kathryn Schiro and Miami Beach Rowing Club’s Natalie Eisermann won the other two heats. The top two finishers from each race advanced directly to Saturday’s semifinals.
In another tight race, Osprey Oars captured the first heat of the men’s quadruple sculls by 0.27 seconds. Osprey clocked a 6:24:10, followed by North Allegheny High School in a 6:24:37 and Newport Aquatic Center in a 6:24:82. Maritime Rowing Club recorded the fastest time of the heats in the men’s quad. The crew won the race with a time of 6:08:69, finishing a little more than two seconds ahead of Malvern Preparatory School. Heat three was captured by Chesapeake Boathouse at 6:21:92
Racing continues on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. with repechages, or second-chance races, and semifinals. Finals will be held on Sunday.
