With the victory, Dampeer earned the right to represent the United States in both the single and the quadruple sculls at the Pan Am Games July 14-19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, pending United States Olympic Committee approval.

Racing in the best two-out-of-three final’s format, Dampeer won Wednesday’s first final by five seconds before coming up 0.002 seconds short in the second final. In Friday’s head-to-head competition, Nichols led through the 1,000-meter mark before Dampeer made her move in the third quarter of the race. Dampeer slowly pulled away from Nichols, finishing with a time of 7:53.11, 4.70 seconds in front. By finishing second, Nichols did earn the right to join Dampeer and the women’s double sculls winners, Margaret Matia and Sarah Trowbridge, in the Pan Am quad.

Friday’s women’s single sculls race completed the six-day trials. During Thursday’s second day of finals, 24 rowers earned the right to represent the U.S. in 12 different events at the Pan American Games, pending USOC approval.
