Dennis Bowsher Wins Silver in Drzonkow, Poland to Cap-off Successful European Campaign for USA Pentathlon Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) posted a career best performance to win the silver medal in the fifth World Cup stop of the Modern Pentathlon season in Drzonkow, Poland to cap-off a very successful European campaign for the USA Pentathlon Team.  Despite accumulating the same point total (5,548) as the gold medalist, Libor Capalini of the Czech Republic, Bowsher received the silver medal based the order of finish of the run portion of the competition.  A heavy thunderstorm came through during the riding portion, forcing the competition to be delayed and moved indoors.  Due to the inclement weather, the riding portion was delayed until after the run.

Bowsher performed exceptionally consistent on the day of the final, posting individual discipline scores of 1,156 in shooting; 808 in fencing; 1,304 in swimming; 1080 in running and 1,200 in riding.  Niul Manske (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) also represented the United States in the final, placing 25th overall with a total modern pentathlon score of 5,312.  This was Manske’s first World Cup Final of the 2007 season, as he had battled illness and injury in the first part of the season.  Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) and Sam Sacksen (Somerset, Pa./Colorado Springs, Colo.) failed to advance past the semifinal round.  The men’s team was coached by Janusz Peciak (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Pentathlon’s Fencing/International Modern Pentathlon Coach, for World Cup #5.

The USA Pentathlon Team was split for the second World Cup weekend in a row with the women competing in Szekefehervar, Hungary.

The USA Pentathlon women’s team continued their strong World Cup performances today at the opening day of competition in the fifth World Cup stop of the season in Szekefehervar, Hungary, placing three of four in Saturday’s final.  Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the USA women finishing the event in fifth place with a total modern pentathlon score of 5,344.  Emily Shertzer (Hershey, Penn./Colorado Springs, Colo.) came from nowhere and turned in a career best performance to finish in ninth place with 5,228 total points.  Mickey Kelly (New York, N.Y./Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) finished the final in 17th place with 5,116 total points.  Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark./Colorado Springs, Colo.) just missed advancing out of the semifinal round.  For this event, the women’s team was coached by Scott Christie (Colorado Springs, Colo.), the Head Modern Pentathlon Coach for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, and Michael Cintas (Rancho Mirage, Calif.), the Head Riding Coach for USA Pentathlon.Individual event scores for Team USA are listed below:

World Cup #5 was the culmination of a three-week European campaign for the USA Pentathlon Team.  World Cup #4 opened the European campaign with the women competing in Moscow, Russia and the men in Budapest, Hungary.  Following the World Cup #4, the USA Pentathlon Team reunited in Drzonkow, Poland for a training camp at Poland’s National Pentathlon Training Center from May 14-23.  The training camp was a continuing extension of international cooperation between the Pentathlon teams representing the two countries.  The USA and Poland have both participated in training camps at each other’s national training centers over the past few years.  Janusz Peciak, 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist in Modern Pentathlon for Poland and the Fencing/International Modern Pentathlon Coach for the USA Pentathlon Team has been instrumental in developing this relationship with the Polish team.
