SPEEDSKATING: Hedrick Wins Bronze at World Championships

INZELL, Germany (March 5, 2005) – The U.S. won a bronze medal Saturday at the World Championships Single Distances.Chad Hedrick (Spring, Tex.) finished third in the men’s 10,000-meters with a time of 13:30.88. Bob de Jong of the Netherlands took home the gold in 13:25.64. “It was a pretty good race,” Hedrick said of his bronze medal performance. “But I figured it wouldn’t be quite enough to win.” KC Boutiette (Tacoma, Wash.) finished 11th in 14:01.01. Nick Pearson (Lake Placid, NY) missed a spot atop the podium in the men’s 1000-meters with a sixth place finish in 1:10.94. Teammate Joey Cheek (Greensboro, NC) finished 11th in 1:11.15. For the ladies, Jennifer Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) finished 12th in the first 500-meters race in 39.42. Her next 500-meters race netted her an eighth place finish in 39.21. Elli Ochowicz (Waukesha, Wis.) finished her first 500-meters race in 19th place in 39.93 and her second race in 14th place in 39.68. Chris Witty (West Allis, Wis.) finished her first 500-meters race in 20th place in 40.05 and her second race landed her an 18th place finish in 40.02. The U.S. ladies did not race in the team pursuit as the majority of the skaters wanted to reserve energy for the upcoming distances. Germany won the event in 3:05.81.
